Description

I've had quite a few comments about this piece thus far, regardless of the fact that it's not done yet!!!

This is the process so far on this piece. As I've mentioned before, I've attempted a new approach and I think it's working so far. (Tell me what ya think!!)

So, following numerous talks with fellow dA member :iconsol-caninus: on the subject of inking, how to approach inking, what an inkers job is specifically, and taking into account all things art such as design & principles, what I've done is approached specific subjects individually.

I usually ink in static form: right to left (I'm left handed), top to bottom...but never really have I taken into account the actual subjects of the pieces I'm inking with regard to eye direction, point of interest or black vs: white. This time, I'm attempting to be more conscious of that; I'm approaching each of the characters individually; when I'm happy individually, I move on to the next subject. Another usual thing for me is ALL blacks, then ALL whites with regards to inks. Again, I'm approaching this by subject; so I'm actually doing all black AND white for one particular subject, before moving on to the next.

In all honesty, it's really helping me be more aware of what it is I'm actually inking, and not just throwing down lines. Once a subject is individually done, it is that much easier to see the 'final picture' of what I want, and move toward that goal. Also, having a particular subject done completely, makes it that much easier to see the line movements around it, which should make my job a little easier with regard to eye movements.

Now, Syaf's pencils tend to be a little on the loose side, a la Jim Lee kind of style, with regards to blacks/black areas, so me "finding" my black areas has been a little more of a challenge that usual, but I swear I'm working with it, and my new approach really seems to be working for me!! It's been a good experience thus far!

I figure maybe another couple hours at it, and it's done.

Phenomenal pencils: :iconardian-syaf:

Inks: :icongrumpyfatfury:

Cheers,
J

After a while I thought it would be the same-old same-old every time, inking by soulless recipe, as so many do.  But to see you troubleshooting, experimenting and telling us about it, changed my mind.  Can't afford to miss your next move, whenever you make it, whatever it may be, so taking steps to make sure that doesn't happen by putting you back on watch.
